Denver Day!

Thursday, March 19, 2009
Woo! The weather has been great the last few days and I'm finally getting some of the ultra important field work done. I even planted the golden beets yesterday. *mmmm*

I'm hoping to get a lot more done in the next few days, though today is a rare and super-special day off for me. Well, kinda. :)

I'm heading to the farm in a few minutes to pick for y'all and Potager, a wonderful in-season restaurant in Denver. Teri, the owner and head chef has been one of the Farmer's Market's biggest supporters over the last few years and she's a huge proponant of buying in season, local and organic. If you get a chance to stop by her beautfiul restaurant, you definitely should. You can find information about Potager at http://www.potagerrestaurant.com .

After making my delivery to Teri, I'm off to see my good friend (and stylist) Jason Schwind at Vain the Salon and get my hair cut. With my birthday quickly approaching I'm feeling that a change is in order. :)

If I have any time after that, I'll probably head back to the farm to get some work done, but it's so nice to know that I'll have a few hours to do "nothing". Those days get to be very rare as the season goes on.

Okay, I'm off to the farm, no pictures today but we'll see what I can get for the next update.

Oh, and before I forget, the red beets are up! We've listed the greens for the candy striped beets so I can thin them out, and the crunchy royale radishes are ready. I'll get pics of all of those today if I can!

Cheers!

Work Work Work!

Yay! The plant studio is done, the turnip greens are coming on strong and despite the lack of moisture, the veggies are loving the sunshine! We're 4 weeks away from the first Farmer's Market of the year and I'm very much looking forward to seeing y'all again!

Today is the beginning of Daylight Savings time and somehow my body knew it. I was up at 5:30 this morning, which would have been 4:30 yesterday, and I still feel great. Gotta love that my internal clock recognizes the dictates of Congress. :)

The return of Daylight Savings means that I'll have an extra hour of sunshine tonight and I plan to take full advantage. Sunset is officially 7:00 on the nose tonight.

Yesterday was awesome, I got the two rows that I've been digging completely dug, raked, composted and planted yesterday. I hate when a project hangs over my head for weeks at a time.

Here's a picture of the never ending project of DOOM!

As you can see, we hand dig each row to at least 12 inches deep each time we plant. When a crop has been in the row for a long time, this can become very difficult. It helps prevent pests (I found a LOT of grasshopper eggs!) as well as control some of the more pernicious weeds. These rows were planted to beets and mizuna, so I've got a lot of yummy to look forward to in about 45 days! :)

Here's a photo of the finished rows:

Okay, I'm off to the farm! Sunshine, longer days, and a new project to start, what more could I ask for?

Cheers!
